Canada Extending Work Permits for 6,700 Temporary Residents in Manitoba
Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, has approved Manitoba’s request to extend temporary resident status for select nominees within the province’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
On May 8th, Minister Marc Miller announced that Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has approved Manitoba’s request to extend temporary resident status for potential nominees identified under the province’s Provincial Nominee Program whose work permits are set to expire in 2024.
These individuals are mainly post-graduation work permit holders currently in the Manitoba Skilled Worker Provincial Nominee Program Expression of Interest pool. They are actively filling key job vacancies in Manitoba and contributing to the province’s economy and cultural diversity.
This temporary extension enables approximately 6,700 temporary workers to sustain their employment while awaiting the processing of their Provincial Nominee Program applications. Manitoba expects eligible foreign nationals to receive official nominations from the province within two years, leading to their becoming permanent residents.
“I am introducing a public policy to provide open work permits to eligible temporary workers in Manitoba’s Expression of Interest pool under PNP. Within 2 years, we expect eligible candidates to receive an official nomination from Manitoba and become permanent residents,” stated Minister Marc Miller.
IRCC emphasizes its commitment to stabilising permanent immigration while reducing the proportion of temporary residents in Canada. It expresses openness to exploring options with other provinces and territories to transition a larger portion of current temporary residents into permanent residents, thereby addressing labour market needs across the country.
