Saskatchewan Polytechnic Partners with PEI to Amid Nursing Shortage
A significant partnership has been formed between Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the Prince Edward Island (PEI) Government to address the critical shortage of qualified nurses in the province. This initiative focuses on internationally educated nurses (IENs) by providing them with the necessary programs and support to successfully integrate into the Canadian healthcare system.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Expertise Meets PEI’s Needs
Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s School of Nursing, recognized for its excellence in healthcare education, is extending its reach to PEI. Through this agreement, IENs in PEI will have access to Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s esteemed Transition to Registered Nursing in Canada and the Registered Nurse Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Nurses.
These programs are designed to equip IENs with the knowledge and skills specific to the Canadian healthcare system, including:
- Canadian healthcare practices
- Health assessment, communication, and care of the elderly
- Medical technology, terminology, and drug therapy
- Regulations, ethics, safety, and cultural competency
A Hybrid Learning Approach for Flexibility
The programs utilize a convenient hybrid learning model, combining online theory courses with in-person registered nursing clinical skills labs and practice education experiences delivered in PEI. This approach allows IENs to gain valuable hands-on experience while accommodating their schedules.
A Streamlined Path to a Fulfilling Career in Nursing
The program’s first cohort commenced in May 2024, with additional groups starting every month. Upon successful program completion, graduates will receive a Saskatchewan Polytechnic credential and be prepared to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Once registered with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI (CRNMPEI), graduates will have access to various career opportunities across the province, including hospitals, rural health facilities, and more.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Commitment to National Impact
This partnership marks a significant step forward in Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s mission to deliver high-quality nursing education across Canada. By expanding its program offerings, Saskatchewan Polytechnic is contributing to the development of a skilled nursing workforce in PEI, ultimately addressing the healthcare needs of Canadians nationwide.
If you’re an internationally educated nurse already residing in PEI or planning to relocate, and you’re eager to start a successful career journey in the Canadian healthcare system, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
